Federal authorities have entered the fray in a lawsuit initiated by California Republicans, aiming to prevent the state's recently passed congressional redistricting map.
This court case, filed in a US district court, challenges the redistricting plan supported by Governor Gavin Newsom, which was created in reaction against a Republican-led gerrymander in Texas.
"California's electoral map represents a brazen power grab that tramples on civil rights and mocks the democratic process," declared the US attorney general.
Democrats have voiced assurance that the redistricting plan will survive court challenges.
"The plaintiffs were defeated in the election and soon they will also lose in court," commented a spokesperson for Governor Newsom.
Legal Basis
The lawsuit claims that California's map improperly used racial considerations to significantly advantage Latino communities in violation of the US Constitution.
"It is unconstitutional to use race as a proxy to further partisan goals, but that is exactly what the California General Assembly did with Proposition 50," stated a high-ranking representative from the DOJ's civil rights unit.
Political Context
The legal battle constitutes the most significant response by the Democratic party in the ongoing redistricting war that started with Texas and has extended to various parts of the country.
Unlike other states, where GOP-controlled legislatures have enacted gerrymanders, California's plan needed voter approval, which it obtained with approximately two-thirds of the vote.
Wider Consequences
Democrats need to gain just a small number of GOP-controlled House seats to gain majority of the chamber in next year's midterm election.
The party that holds the majority will shape the final years of the sitting president's term, determining whether a GOP-controlled legislature will continue to deliver its agenda or encounter opposition, congressional probes and possible further challenges.
