Royal Air Force Typhoon FGR4s have conducted a mission with France's air force in a coordinated attack on an subterranean weapons facility in Syrian territory used by the Islamic State group (IS), as stated by the British defence ministry.
The site, located using reconnaissance, was thought to be containing munitions and bombs, the release indicated, and was located in mountains just north of the historic site of Palmyra in central Syria.
"The RAF jets used laser-guided Paveway IV weapons to hit a series of entry passages providing entry to the depot... preliminary assessments are that the objective was successfully hit," officials stated.
There was no sign of any civilian impact in the strike on Saturday evening and each participating jet returned to base without incident, the defence officials confirmed.
The Typhoon fighters were assisted by a Voyager aerial refuelling aircraft.
IS - also known as Daesh - enforced jihadist rule over parts of both Syria and Iraq until 2019.
"This operation demonstrates our UK leadership, and commitment to operate in unison with our allies, to eradicate any resurgence of Daesh and their harmful and extremist ideologies in the area," UK Defence Secretary the minister remarked.
British military aircraft have performed patrols over Syria to "deter any efforts to regroup" of IS subsequent to its military defeat at the Baghuz confrontation in 2019, the ministry said.
"I extend gratitude to every member of the UK armed forces who took part in this mission for their skill and their valour," Healey said. "They were among a great many British troops stationed over the holidays. This action, to remove dangerous terrorists who threaten our security, demonstrates how UK forces are always on standby, throughout the year, ensuring Britain's security domestically and strong abroad."
During December, the US military carried out what it called a "large-scale strike" targeting Islamic State objectives in Syria, after an assault killed two American soldiers and a civilian interpreter in the Palmyra area.
The UN reports Islamic State still boasts between 5,000 and 7,000 fighters in Syria and Iraq.
